VW ID.4 has a little curiosity that plays sounds when a software update is performed. These sounds might make you think that aliens have finally arrived on Earth.
In July, a YouTuber named Ps3mn1 shared a video of a white VW ID.4 emitting eerie squeaks and shrieks while parked in a garage. It would be easy to mistake these sounds for some sort of malfunction, perhaps caused by a problem with the speakers and perhaps the electric drivetrain itself. But that's not the case.
Road & Track reached out to Volkswagen to find out what exactly is causing the ID.4 to make these strange noises. A company spokesperson revealed that the bizarre noises occur when the car receives a software update. When this happens, the car loses connection to its CAN bus and speed sensors, which are normally used to determine if the car is traveling at a low speed and if the pedestrian warning sound is needed. Without a connection to these sensors, the system freaks out and makes these sounds.
It is unknown if VW is looking into ways to eliminate the strange noises, but it has been working on a comprehensive update for the ID.4. While full details on the 2024 ID.4 are scarce, it's already known that the entry-level models will have some increased power and range.
