In December 2023, Germany witnessed a notable rise in the registration of electric cars. The German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) reported 54,654 new registrations of electric vehicles, influenced by the impending end of the environmental bonus.

December 2023 saw a 21.6% increase in electric car registrations compared to November, with a total of 54,654 new electric vehicles. This surge is attributed to the short-notice cancellation of the environmental bonus. However, these numbers mark a 47.6% decline from the record high in December 2022.

The total new electric car registrations for 2023 reached 524,219, making December the second strongest month of the year. The overall passenger car market, however, experienced a 23% decrease in December compared to the previous year, with 241,883 new registrations.

The decrease in registrations is partly due to the exceptionally high numbers in December 2022, driven by the anticipated reduction in the environmental bonus. Other drive types also saw changes, with petrol vehicles increasing by 16.1% and diesel by 10.3%, while hybrids without plugs decreased by 33.2%.

December 2023 marked a significant period for electric vehicle registrations in Germany, largely influenced by policy changes. Despite a decrease from the previous year, electric vehicles constituted a substantial portion of new car registrations, showcasing the continuing trend towards electric mobility.
