Markus Schäfer also told Autocar at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2024 that the smaller Mercedes G-Class will not utilise the new Mercedes Modular Architecture (MMA) developed for the brand's electric cars. Instead, the mini SUV will be based on a different platform that will utilise components from Mercedes' larger rear-wheel-drive vehicles.
The mini electric SUV should be the third model in the G-Class range after the familiar combustion-engined SUV and its electric EQG counterpart. This vehicle is due in 2026 and should compete with SUVs such as the Land Rover Defender 90. Later that year, a full-size EQG will also hit the market.
