China has tested the first urban hydrogen train. The test run took place on a test line in the north-eastern province of Jilin.

A hydrogen train has been released by local company CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles. According to Xinhua Agency, the train managed to accelerate to 160 km/h with a full load during a test run. During the tests, the stated performance and various modes were verified.

The train is equipped with an in-built hydrogen-fuelled power system and uses a hybrid power system with multiple energy storage units. The developer claims that the integration of the various systems significantly improves energy efficiency: the train's energy consumption does not exceed 5 kWh per kilometre. It has a maximum range of "more than 1,000 kilometres" and is capable of operating in a temperature range of -25 to 35 °C.

No word yet on when such trains will be able to fully operate in China's transport system.
