In 2023, the Hyundai Elantra became the most stolen vehicle in America, dethroning the Chevy Silverado. This shift is highlighted by National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) data, which shows a significant representation of Hyundai and Kia models among the top stolen vehicles.

Hyundai and Kia vehicles now dominate the NICB's list with six models in the top 10. Following the Elantra are the Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima with 42,813 and 30,204 thefts respectively. Other models include the Kia Soul, Kia Forte, and Kia Sportage. These figures underscore a growing target preference by thieves for these brands.

The Chevrolet Silverado fell to fourth place with 23,721 thefts reported in 2023 after leading the list in 2022.

Vehicle theft nationwide slightly increased from last year, totaling 1,020,729 reported cases. This represents approximately a 1% rise from 2022 figures. Despite this increase, there is a high recovery rate; about 85% of stolen vehicles are recovered annually.

An encouraging statistic from NICB shows that about 34% of these stolen vehicles were found within a day of being reported stolen. Effective reporting and rapid response contribute to these swift recoveries.

To combat vehicle thefts, NICB advises owners to take preventive measures such as parking in well-lit areas and ensuring that their cars are locked with valuables hidden. They also warn against leaving cars running unattended—a common mistake that leads to opportunities for thieves.
