The new facility in Shanghai is set up to manage end-to-end logistics specifically tailored for EV batteries and fully assembled electric vehicles. It will handle tasks ranging from domestic pickup and warehousing to exports via various international transportation modes. Additional services include stringent temperature and humidity monitoring throughout the logistic process, ensuring customs clearance and facilitating last-mile deliveries.
One of the core challenges addressed by this center revolves around handling high-voltage batteries. As these components are classified both as dangerous goods and being among the most expensive parts of electric vehicles, strict safety protocols and regulatory compliance are imperative for their handling. The Shanghai Center of Excellence promises not only compliance but also efficiency in these critical areas.
China's dominance in the global EV market is well-documented, with data showing over half of all electric vehicles globally originating there as of 2023. Moreover, it houses six out of the ten top battery manufacturers worldwide and supplies nearly 60% of all battery cells internationally. This strategic positioning enhances the importance of having an advanced logistics hub like the one just opened by DHL.
DHL Global Forwarding’s network, comprising 35 branches across China, supports the operations of the Shanghai EV Center of Excellence. The network also includes more than 50 warehouses and cross-dock facilities as well. Lastly, it has an eco-friendly fleet consisting of 250+ electric and hydrogen vehicles that run for more than 320,000 miles (514,990 km).
DHL Group has EV Centers of Excellence in several other locations around the world, including Batam (Indonesia), Mexico City (Mexico), Dubai (UAE) and Valley Cross (UK).
