Audi has announced plans to end production of the Q8 e-tron and Q8 Sportback e-tron earlier than expected. This decision follows a decline in demand and sales cannibalization from newer models.

The Q8 e-tron, previously known as the Audi e-tron, played a significant role in Audi’s transition to electric vehicles. However, the company has confirmed they are “considering the early end of production” due to a “global decline in customer orders in the electric luxury class segment.”

Audi explained that demand for the Q8 e-tron and Q8 Sportback e-tron has significantly dropped, partly due to the launch of newer EVs like the Q6 e-tron, which is cheaper, more modern, and offers a longer range.

The sharp decline in orders for the Q8 e-tron lineup is also influenced by “long-standing structural challenges at the Brussels site” where these models are produced. These challenges include high logistics costs and a plant layout that is difficult to modify due to its location near the city center.

While the discontinuation of these models is being considered, Audi acknowledges the complexity of such a move. The Board of Management of Audi Brussels has informed the Company Council of their intention to restructure the site, initiating an information and consultation process as required by Belgian law. This process will explore potential solutions for the site, which may include ceasing operations if no alternatives are found.

Despite the consideration to end production, Audi Brussels CEO Volker Germann emphasized, “The announcement does not mean that a decision has been made.” He acknowledged the impact of this news on the employees in Brussels, stating, “This news has been felt very profoundly by the employees in Brussels and by me too.”
