The Tesla Model Y is gearing up for an update, with prototypes recently seen testing on public roads.

Heavily camouflaged vehicles obscure any styling changes, but new images on Reddit offer an unofficial glimpse of the Model Y update, reportedly codenamed Project Juniper.

If accurate, the Model Y will replace its generic taillight clusters with a fashionable lightbar featuring modern, classy lighting elements. Instead of traditional lightbars illuminated from within, the Model Y seems to use backlighting that casts light on a silver bar with Tesla lettering, replacing the logo on the rear fascia, similar to the updated Model 3.

Digital artists have envisioned the revised Model Y's rear, showing a resemblance to Rivian products with their full-width lighting panels. The rendering includes the unique lightbar, Model 3 boomerang taillights, and a more prominent ducktail spoiler, though it’s speculative and not indicative of a final design.

Leaked images also provide a peek at the interior, revealing minimal changes. The door trims and dashboard appear mostly unchanged, with visible ambient lighting strips, Alcantara trim, leatherette upholstery, and perforated seat upholstery.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has indicated the new Model Y won’t be introduced this year, suggesting a late 2024 or early 2025 release. Despite no official announcement, sources suggest it may arrive sooner to address slowed Model 3 sales.

We anticipate the front fascia will adopt the Model 3's sleek headlights and revised bumper treatments. Critics argue the Model Y resembles a taller Model 3, so differentiation between the two models will be important. Inside, the crossover is likely to include interior revisions, such as the removal of physical controls for main vehicle functions, along with improvements in range, performance, and efficiency.
