The Smart #5, slated for release in Europe early next year, will bring the brand into uncharted territory with a mid-size crossover SUV that's roughly as big as a Mercedes GLC.

The #5 stretches 4,705 mm (185.2 inches) long with a wheelbase of 2,900 mm (114.2 inches). It packs a 100 kWh battery with 800V technology, promising a range of over 740 km (460 miles) on the Chinese CLTC cycle. Drivers will appreciate the super-charging function, which can boost the battery from 10% to 80% in just 15 minutes.

Smart's designers have given the #5 a sleek look. The front sports oblong headlights connected by a thin illuminated strip, with a series of oval-shaped lights below. The body features plastic cladding, streamlined bodywork, and flush-mounted door handles. Aerodynamically optimized wheels with floating center caps, reminiscent of Rolls-Royce, add a touch of luxury. The greenhouse flows smoothly into prominent D-pillars adorned with the Smart logo.

For those craving more adventure, the Summit Edition adds a roof-mounted light bar, side steps, and a ladder for easy roof carrier access. It also includes underbody protection, an electric trailer hitch, and an external storage compartment similar to the Land Rover Defender.

Inside, the #5 doesn't skimp on premium features. The cabin boasts premium leather and oak wood trim. Front passengers will enjoy zero-gravity seats that recline up to 121 degrees, while rear passengers get heated seats with adjustable backrests. A 256-color ambient lighting system sets the mood, and a 21-speaker Sennheiser audio system delivers top-notch sound.

The tech-savvy will appreciate the 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 13-inch infotainment system. The latter features a lion avatar named Leo and a generative AI voice assistant. A 25.6-inch augmented reality head-up display rounds out the high-tech cockpit.

Rear passengers haven't been forgotten. They get an electric sunshield and airplane-style LED reading lights with a 'first class' setting. A comfort mode increases legroom, and the seats can be configured for various sleeping arrangements, including king-size, queen-size, and single options.

Storage won't be an issue with 34 compartments scattered throughout the cabin, plus a frunk and up to 1,530 liters (54 cubic feet) of cargo space.

According to China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the #5 will come in single-motor rear-wheel-drive configurations with either 335 hp or 358 hp. A dual-motor all-wheel-drive version will also be available, with a 221 hp front motor.
