The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says owners should park these cars away from buildings and charge them outside. They'll need to keep doing this for a month after Jaguar fixes the problem.
Jaguar's tried to fix this before. They've done three recalls already, but some cars still caught fire even after getting new software. The company saw smoke and fire coming from under three cars in the U.S. after they'd been updated.
Now, Jaguar's working on a real fix. For now, they're putting in new software to keep the battery charge at 80% or less. But they're still figuring out how to solve the problem for good.
This isn't just about cars catching fire while they're being driven. There's worry about fires starting when cars are parked in garages or when people are sleeping. And the fact that Jaguar wants people to be careful for a month after the fix shows they're not sure the problem's really solved.
Jaguar started looking at this again in July. They found out their old software wasn't doing enough to keep the cars safe. This made owners think their cars were okay when they might not have been.
