Hyundai's getting ready to roll out a new version of its Nexo hydrogen car. The company's been spotted testing a prototype of the next-generation fuel cell SUV on public roads.

The new Nexo looks different from the current model. It's swapped some curves for straighter lines, giving it a more modern look. The back end is a bit more upright, which should make it more practical. From the middle of the car forward, it shares some design cues with the new Santa Fe, but it's got a shorter wheelbase.

One of the standout features is a distinctive kick in the waistline at the back of the rear door. When Hyundai unveils the car next year, we'll probably see a full-width light bar across the front. The rear lights are different from what we've seen in earlier unofficial sketches - they're not placed on either side of the window anymore.

Hyundai hasn't said much about what's under the hood yet. The current Nexo puts out 161 hp (163 PS / 230 kW) and 291 lb-ft (395 Nm) of torque, with a range of 380 miles (611 km). We're expecting the new model to be more powerful and go even further on a single fill-up. There are rumors it might even reach 497 miles (800 km).

The Nexo first hit the US market in 2018, but you could only buy it in California because that's where the refueling stations were. It launched in the UK in 2019 and made its way to Australia in 2021. But it's still a rare sight on the roads.

Hyundai's aiming to have the new Nexo ready for the 2026 model year. We'll likely see the final design unveiled sometime next year. It's an important step for Hyundai as they continue to push forward with alternative fuel vehicles.
