Ford has told its electric vehicle owners to stop using the free adapters for Tesla's Superchargers. The company made this decision after spotting a potential issue that could slow down charging and even damage the charging port.

The problem came to light when InsideEVs found a service bulletin from Ford. The carmaker plans to recall the adapters and replace them in the coming weeks, at no cost to customers.

Ford signed a deal with Tesla in May 2023 to let its EV owners use Superchargers in Canada and the US. The company gave out free adapters to connect the North American standard CCS ports on Ford EVs to Tesla's NACS cables.

Ford first set a June 2024 deadline for customers to claim their free adapters. They pushed it back to September 30, 2024, because of supplier issues. Now, with this new problem, they might extend the deadline again.

Other carmakers like Nissan, Rivian, GM, and Subaru have made similar deals with Tesla and offered adapters to their customers. Many plan to switch to the NACS standard in their future vehicles. Ford aims to make the switch by 2025.
