The update, version 2024.44.3.1, adds a separate 'Charge Port Heater' option in the Controls > Service menu. Model Y and Model X owners have confirmed getting this update, and it's expected to roll out to all Tesla models soon.
Tesla introduced the charging port heater in the second half of 2020. Its job is to stop ice from building up and make it easy to open the port in cold weather. Before this update, the heater only worked when you turned on the rear defrost (which also heated the side mirrors) or when you warmed up the cabin.
This change will be a big help for Tesla owners in colder areas. They can now keep their charge port ice-free without wasting energy on defrosting windows or heating the whole car. It's a smart move that'll make charging in winter more efficient.
The charging port heater still turns on automatically in a few situations. It'll activate with the general defrost functions, when the car is getting the battery ready for charging, or when you set a Supercharger as your destination in the navigation system.
