Electrogenic specialises in electrifying old cars. The company's portfolio already includes projects to redesign iconic models such as the Porsche 911, Land Rover Defender and Jaguar E-Type. They've even electrified a DeLorean, a Rolls-Royce Phantom and a 1993 Kia Pride.
The new kit for the MX-5 increases the weight of the car by just 100kg, but boosts power by 21 per cent. A 42 kWh battery is placed in place of the original 1.8-litre engine and in the space of the former fuel tank.
The electric motor produces 160 hp and 310 Nm of torque. Top speed is 185 km/h and acceleration from 0 to 96 km/h (60 mph) takes about 6 seconds. The range reaches 240 kilometres and charging takes up to an hour.
The car features two driving modes. Eco helps to maximise range, while Sport unlocks maximum performance. The kit is compatible with both manual and automatic transmissions. A single-speed gearbox is used and the drive remains rear-wheel drive.
It's important to note that the conversion is reversible. Owners can return their Mazda MX-5 to its original configuration if they wish. This approach allows you to enjoy the benefits of electrification while still being able to restore the car's historic value.
