According to Business Insider, more than 100 premium cars were illegally delivered from Germany to Russian buyers despite the current sanctions. BMW confirmed the deliveries and announced that it had taken measures to prevent such cases in the future.
The EU imposed sanctions on Russia in early 2022 over its war of aggression against Ukraine. In particular, the trade in cars was embargoed.
Despite the restrictions, cars from German brands such as BMW, Mercedes, and Volkswagen still appear in Russia through grey imports. In August, ARD journalists found that new cars of these brands are available for free sale in Russia. The BMW Group claims to be continuing its fight against illegal deliveries.
