The Mercedes-Benz Vans division, previously focused on an "all-electric future" using the new VAN.EA (Van Electric Architecture) platform for all models, has announced a review of its strategy. In a bid to "meet customer requirements", Mercedes-Benz Vans plans to expand its offering of models with internal combustion engines (ICE).
The previously announced full transition to the VAN.EA platform, developed specifically for electric vehicles, was planned to begin in 2026. However, the company has now decided to create a separate platform for internal combustion engine vehicles, dubbed VAN.CA (Van Combustion Architecture). In doing so, Mercedes-Benz is emphasising a significant degree of continuity between the two platforms.
Mercedes-Benz representatives said that the VAN.CA and VAN.EA platforms share about 70 per cent of common components. In addition, vehicles on the VAN.CA and VAN.EA platforms will be able to be produced on the same production line, minimising the financial impact of strategy adjustments.
By offering both electric and internal combustion engine versions of the powertrains, Mercedes-Benz Vans expects to "secure a competitive market position in the future". The company also notes that the two platforms provide "the most flexible product portfolio possible" to adapt to changing consumer preferences and market conditions.
The first electric models on the VAN.EA platform are still expected in 2026. No word yet on the timing of vehicles on the VAN.CA platform.
