According to a Mercedes spokesperson quoted by Automotive News Europe, the German manufacturer "will no longer use 'EQ' in the model nomenclature of new vehicles." This means that there will be no new purely electric models starting with "EQ". Instead, future cars will carry the name of internal combustion engine versions, plus "EQ Technology" at the end.
This strategy has already begun to be applied to the G580 EQ Technology from last year. The next model in line to receive the "EQ Technology" branding will be the new CLA, which will be released next month. The third generation of the sedan will also be sold as a plug-in hybrid with "EQ Hybrid Technology" terminology. The petrol and diesel engine versions will be called simply "CLA".
At least 17 electric vehicles and 19 internal combustion engine vehicles are planned by the end of 2027. "The largest product launch campaign in history" includes a downsized G-Class and an electric version of the next-generation S-Class around 2030. Before that, however, the current version of the flagship model will be updated in 2026.
