The legendary Nissan GT-R is heading for an honourable retirement. The Japanese carmaker has finished taking orders for the iconic sports car in Japan, signalling the end of its 18-year production run.

The Nissan GT-R has been phased out of selected markets around the world since 2021. It was first withdrawn from sale in Europe due to new noise regulations, and then in Australia due to stricter safety standards. Production for North America ended in October 2023.

Nissan's Japanese website recently reported, "The Nissan GT-R has received many orders and their acceptance has been completed in line with planned production." Exactly how many cars remain to be assembled is unknown, but it's no longer possible to place a new order.

Nissan GT-R (2025)

The GT-R (R35) made its debut in 2007. For 18 years it received minimal updates, twice went through a facelift, but stayed true to its 3.8-litre twin-turbo V6 engine. The entry-level version had 471bhp, while the latest GT-R Nismo develops up to 600bhp.

What's next? There's no official successor yet, but Nissan's design director recently hinted that a new GT-R could arrive by 2030. Admittedly, whether it will be electric, hybrid or remain with an internal combustion engine is still a mystery.
