BMW expected that most buyers would choose the M5 saloon and only a third would choose the M5 Touring station wagon. However, the two versions of the same model have already equalled each other in sales.

BMW's Vice President of Customer Experience, Brand and Sales Sylvia Neubauer told BMW Blog that the company has increased production volumes of the M5 model due to increased demand. She also noted that sales of the Touring version are growing faster than the sedan.

With a maximum output of 727bhp and 1,000Nm of torque, the new M5 Touring is the most powerful production station wagon with an internal combustion engine in the world. Even the electric Porsche Taycan Turbo S Sport Turismo develops "only" up to 952 hp. However, it is also one of the heaviest cars with this body type. The European specification for the M5 Touring specifies a weight of 2550kg (with driver).

The cost of the plug-in hybrid BMW M5 Touring starts at 150,000 euros.
