Jeep has officially unveiled the third generation of the Compass crossover in Europe. The model is completely reimagined with brutal design, more premium interior and - for the first time - an all-electric version.

Like the Opel Grandland, Citroën C5 Aircross and Peugeot 3008, the new Compass is built on the STLA Medium platform, but Jeep emphasises that it has refined it to provide the best off-road performance in the class. In particular, the model received increased to 200 mm clearance and the ability to overcome fords up to 470 mm deep. Short overhangs provide entry, ramp and exit angles of 20°, 15° and 26° respectively. All versions are equipped with a multi-surface driving mode selection system controlled by a large red switch on the centre console.

In terms of length, the Compass has stretched to 4548 mm, which is 150 mm longer than its predecessor. The wheelbase has been increased by 159 mm (to 2795 mm), and the cabin has 55 mm more legroom on both rows of seats.

The design was developed by an international team led by the Jeep studio in Turin, Italy. Chrome has disappeared - for reasons of ecology and minimalism. The front part of the body is adorned with a new interpretation of the trademark grille with seven slots, combined into a single panel. Inside, there is a 10-inch digital instrument panel and 16-inch centre screen, as well as touchscreen controls for many functions.

The Compass is offered for the first time with three types of powertrains at once: hybrid, plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and all-electric, which Jeep says covers up to 90 per cent of the European market's needs.

The internal combustion engine versions are front-wheel drive: they are either a mild hybrid with 145 hp or a 195 hp PHEV with a 21 kWh battery and a range of up to 85 kilometres without starting the internal combustion engine.

Electric cars are offered in front-wheel drive versions with 213 hp and 231 hp. The range is up to 500 km with a 73 kWh battery or up to 650 km with a 96 kWh battery.

At the top of the range is the 4xe all-wheel drive version. The 180 hp rear electric motor is supplemented by a gearbox, providing up to 3,226 N-m of torque to the rear wheels on request. Total power is 375 hp, which makes Compass 4xe the most powerful car on the STLA platform in Europe. In addition, the 4xe version received an additional 10 mm suspension lift.
