Audi has announced a recall of approximately 90,000 Q5 Quattro and Q5 Sportback Quattro vehicles from model years 2022-2024 in the United States.

The reason for the recall is that the cylinder head cover screws may be loose. This fault could lead to engine oil leakage and increase the risk of fire.

As the manufacturer explains, different tightening forces were applied during the assembly of the engines, and "in some cases, a reliable and durable connection cannot be guaranteed." In May 2023, the company received the first complaints about oil leaks, and then launched a technical investigation.

Engineers discovered that the screws might have had burrs that had occurred during production. These defects damaged the seating surface of the cylinder head cover, which led to a loss of tightening torque and, as a result, to leakage.

In January 2024, Audi sent a technical bulletin to dealers advising them to check the cap screws and replace them if necessary. However, in May 2024, the company began to receive complaints about "thermal incidents" - overheating or fire caused by the appearance of grease.

To date, Audi has registered 2,539 warranty claims for leaks and 11 reports of thermal incidents. However, the manufacturer believes that the problem affects no more than 5% of the vehicles in the recalled batch.

Recall notification letters will be sent out on 8 July 2025. Dealers will check and, if necessary, replace the cylinder head cover screws. Audi's internal recall number is 15ZK.
