The Land Cruiser J250, also known as the Land Cruiser Prado, has received a new powertrain with 48-volt mild hybrid technology. The hybrid system is intended for the European version of the model.

The first electrified Toyota Land Cruiser 250 combines the existing 2.8-liter turbocharged diesel, an 8-speed Direct Shift automatic transmission, a DC-DC converter, and a starter-generator instead of a conventional starter. The latter receives and delivers power (in recuperation mode) to a small lithium-ion battery. Toyota says that all components are designed and placed to withstand harsh conditions, so the vehicle’s off-road capabilities remain uncompromised - including a wading depth of 700 mm.

This system provides a quieter and faster stop and start of the diesel engine, as well as smoother and more linear acceleration right from the start. A similar 48-volt hybrid setup previously appeared on the Toyota Hilux pickup.

An additional 4.3 Ah battery weighs 7.6 kg and is located under the trunk floor. When fully charged, the electric motor provides an additional 12 kW of power and 65 Nm of torque at startup.

European sales of the new Land Cruiser with mild hybrid technology are expected to begin in the coming days, although customer deliveries are not anticipated until late 2025.
