The previous most popular model of Volvo - the Volvo 240, was introduced in the summer of 1974. Over the years, the 240 was available as a two-door coupe, a four-door sedan, and a five-door station wagon. The "brick" was a massive success - the Swedish automaker produced 2,685,171 vehicles from 1974 to 1993.
Although the last car rolled off the production line in Gothenburg over 32 years ago, the 240 remained the most popular model of Volvo all this time. Until recently. Recently, the crossover XC60 surpassed the mark of 2.7 million units.
Initially, the XC60 was manufactured only in Europe. Later, the crossover became the first global model from Volvo, which was also produced in China to support local sales. In 2018, the XC60 was named "World Car of the Year".
The current generation of the XC60 became the most popular plug-in hybrid in Europe in 2024.
