Tesla is preparing to launch an extended version of the Model Y crossover in China. The new version, designated L, will have three rows of seats, six places, a longer wheelbase, and a more powerful drive unit.

As stated in the certification application submitted to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People's Republic of China (MIIT), the dimensions of the new one are 4976×1920×1668 mm with a wheelbase of 3040 mm. This makes it 179 mm longer and 150 mm wider than the standard five-seater Model Y. The weight is 2088 kg compared to 1992 kg for the regular version. The electric crossover is based on the same platform and uses NMC (Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt) batteries from LG.

The extended Model Y will be equipped with a dual-motor all-wheel drive: The electric motor at the front axle produces 142 kW, and at the rear axle 198 kW. The total power reaches 340 kW (456 hp), which is slightly more than the standard version Model Y Long Range (331 kW / 450 hp). The top speed is limited to 201 km/h.

Tesla Model Y L

The Model Y remains Tesla's key model in China. In 2024, 480,309 units of the crossover were sold, making it the best-selling vehicle of the American brand in the local market. It accounted for almost 75% of all Tesla sales in the country. However, following the facelift in January (Juniper version), demand began to decline: In the first half of 2025, 171,491 vehicles were sold - 17.5% less than in the first half of 2024.

With the introduction of the Model Y L, the company hopes to regain consumer interest. Competitors include Onvo L90, BYD Tang L, Huawei Aito M9, and Li Auto L8. According to Chinese sources, the price of the new one is expected to be around 300,000 yuan (approximately $41,800). The premiere is expected in autumn 2025.
