Nissan repeated its long-standing fuel efficiency record: the Qashqai crossover with the e-Power hybrid setup traveled a legendary route from Land's End to John o' Groats on a single tank of gasoline - 837 miles (1,347 km). This route runs the entire length of the island of Great Britain between its two ends - the southwest and the northeast.
During the test, engineers achieved a consumption of 75 miles per gallon (3.76 l/100 km) - better than the official WLTP cycle figure of 62.8 miles per gallon (4.5 l/100 km). Moreover, the new Qashqai started with a tank that is 10 liters smaller than that of the diesel version of the first generation, which made a similar run in 2007 with a result of 67.35 miles per gallon (4.2 l/100 km).
The journey took 18 hours over two days, and the crossover arrived at its destination with a fuel reserve of about 100 miles (160 km).
The feature of the e-Power system is that the turbocharged 1.5-liter gasoline engine does not drive the wheels directly, but operates as a generator for a small 1.8 kWh battery that powers the electric motor. The engine produces 201 hp and 330 Nm, and after a recent update received a compact "five in one" unit (motor, generator, inverter, and two gearboxes).
Nissan representatives did not disclose the average speed and driving style during the test but acknowledged that careful driving can improve results compared to laboratory measurements.
