Mercedes-Benz and BMW are discussing potential cooperation in the field of powertrains. The first Mercedes cars with BMW engines could appear as early as 2027.

According to the publication Manager Magazin, Mercedes is considering the possibility of purchasing engines from BMW.

The potential cooperation involves the supply of a new generation of gasoline engines from BMW for use in Mercedes CLA, GLA, GLB, C-Class, E-Class, and GLC models, as well as in the small G-Class, which is currently being prepared for premiere. The possible deal between competitors is positioned as a strategic step to reduce development costs.

A candidate for under the hood of Mercedes-Benz cars is the 2.0-liter BMW B48 turbocharged gasoline engine, which is used in many BMW and Mini models. It is suitable for both longitudinal and transverse installation, as well as compatible with hybrid schemes and can function as a generator in electric models with extended range.

If the partnership develops, both companies could eventually expand joint production beyond Europe. In particular, launching a joint powertrain manufacturing in the USA, which would help the brands avoid tariffs and share production costs in a key market.

Mercedes already has an agreement with Chinese Geely, which supplies a 1.5-liter turbo engine M252 for hybrid models, but the partnership with BMW looks more advantageous for Europe and North America.
