Toyota has introduced a local version of the Highlander 2026 SUV in China, and it differs significantly from the American one.

The Highlander for the Chinese market is produced by the GAC Toyota joint venture. There is also an almost identical model, the Crown Kluger, from FAW Toyota, but that is another story.

At first glance, the Highlander 2026 looks almost the same as before, but the changes are noticeable inside the cabin. All trims have received a 15.6-inch multimedia screen instead of the previous 10.25 and 12.3-inch units. It combines with a standard 12.3-inch digital instrument panel. A projection display (HUD) has been added to the list of optional features.

In comparison, the Limited and Platinum trims of the American Highlander are equipped with two 12.3-inch screens and a 10-inch projection display. The remaining versions are satisfied with a smaller 7-inch instrument panel paired with an 8-inch multimedia screen.

To make room for the larger screen, Toyota has changed the configuration of the dashboard. The vents have become thinner, and physical climate control elements have given way to touch controls. Among other changes are a 50-watt wireless charging for gadgets and new color options for Nappa leather seats. Higher trims have received a panoramic roof, rear seats with electric adjustment and heating, as well as an 11-speaker JBL audio system. Customers can still choose between a five-seat and a seven-seat configuration.

There are no changes under the hood. The 2.0-liter turbo engine produces 244 hp. It is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel-drive system. The hybrid version based on a 2.5-liter engine delivers a total of 243 hp, offering a choice between front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive (E-Four) versions.

The slightly updated Toyota Highlander is already available for order in China at prices ranging from 249,800 to 325,800 yuan ($35,000-$45,700). In comparison, the American Highlander starts at $45,270 and goes up to $54,675.

The fourth generation Highlander has been produced since 2019, though it only reached China in 2021. The GAC Toyota joint venture has confirmed that the next generation of the crossover will receive "major updates" alongside the introduction of an extended-range powertrain, a popular solution among Chinese buyers.
