MG SAIC has started sales of a new version of the MG4 hatchback — the Anxin Edition. It is the first budget electric vehicle with a semi-solid-state battery.

The new MG4 appeared on the Chinese market in March 2025. At the start of sales, there was a surprise: the car was announced not in the initially declared four versions, but in five. The fifth was the Anxin Edition version with a semi-solid-state battery from the startup QingTao Energy, into which the parent company SAIC invested several years ago.

Such batteries are still rare in the industry and are considered an intermediate step towards fully solid-state batteries. They promise significant range increase, reduced charging time, and improved safety compared to conventional liquid electrolyte batteries.

Before the appearance of the MG4 Anxin Edition, only another Chinese company, Nio, which produces more premium and expensive electric cars, installed semi-solid-state batteries in series vehicles. Thus, the MG4 became the first compact mass-market car with this innovative storage technology.

The battery capacity is 53.95 kWh. Combined with a permanent magnet synchronous motor with a maximum power of 120 kW, the range in the CLTC cycle is 530 km with an energy consumption of 11.9 kWh per 100 km. On a 2C fast charge, the battery charges from 30 to 80% in 21 minutes. The maximum speed is limited to 160 km/h. The new generation is significantly larger than its predecessor: length is 4.40 m, width is 1.84 m, height is 1.55 m, and wheelbase is 2.75 m.

In China, the MG4 Anxin Edition costs about 100 thousand yuan (approximately 12 thousand euros), while versions with conventional lithium-ion batteries start from 70 thousand yuan (approximately 8.5 thousand euros). The new MG4 is declared a global model, but it is still unclear if the Anxin Edition will be presented in Europe. Additionally, Chinese price tags cannot be directly compared with European ones. Taking into account logistics costs, duties, and other fees, in Germany, the starting price of the previous generation MG4 Electric is currently 34,990 euros.
