BMW has announced a global recall campaign affecting around 575,000 vehicles. The reason is a possible starter defect: wear of the magnetic switch can lead to overheating and, in rare cases, ignition.

The problem became known after internal checks and customer inquiries. BMW explains that over time, especially with a large number of engine starts, wear of the starter’s magnetic switch may increase. The first signs are that the engine starts with difficulty or does not start at all. In extreme cases, overheating of the unit is possible, increasing the risk of fire.

The German automobile club ADAC specifies that metal shavings can cause a short circuit in the magnetic switch. Further overheating of the starter is possible, including during motion.

The recall campaign covers the following models:

  • 2 Series Coupé (G42)
  • 3 Series Sedan (G20)
  • 3 Series Touring (G21)
  • 3 Series Long Wheelbase for China (G28)
  • 4 Series Coupé (G22)
  • 4 Series Convertible (G23)
  • 4 Series Gran Coupé (G26)
  • 5 Series Sedan (G30)
  • 5 Series Touring (G31)
  • 6 Series Gran Turismo (G32)
  • 7 Series Sedan (G11, G12)
  • X3 (G01)
  • X4 (G02)
  • X5 (G05)
  • X6 (G06)
  • Z4 (G29)

The recall campaign also includes the Toyota Supra, which is technically identical to the Z4.

In Germany, a starter replacement is planned for these vehicles. In some cases, according to ADAC, battery replacement may also be necessary. Until repairs are carried out, owners are advised not to leave the vehicle unattended with the engine running if it falls under the recall campaign.

The company also advises checking the VIN number through the official recall campaign verification service in their country and scheduling an appointment with a dealer if necessary.
