KGM has updated its flagship pickup Rexton Sports XL, adding premium flair, modern technology, and retaining a payload capacity of over a ton.

KGM, the brand we previously knew as SsangYong, continues its aggressive expansion into the European market. The newcomer is the Rexton Sports XL. This is an attempt to sit on two chairs at once: to offer the endurance of a workhorse and the level of comfort you would typically expect from a family SUV. The Koreans have been producing pickups for more than twenty years, so they have plenty of experience, but this time the focus has shifted towards technology and "premium" features.

A truck with a gentleman's face

The appearance of the new Rexton Sports XL has become significantly more expressive. Dominating the front is a massive grille and a new light signature for the daytime running lights with five dynamic LED modules. This adds visual weight and solidity to the vehicle. The rear features Full LED taillights and bumper-integrated steps, facilitating access to the cargo area.

Speaking of the cargo area. Its dimensions are impressive: length 1610 mm, width 1570 mm, and height 570 mm. The total volume according to the VDA standard is 1262 liters. Depending on the chosen rear suspension configuration, you get different capabilities:

  • Leaf suspension: for those who need to carry the maximum load. Payload - 1085 kg.
  • Five-link suspension: for those who value comfort and stability on the road. Payload - 865 kg.

For convenience, there are eight hooks for securing the load, LED lighting for the side, and electronic opening of the rear tailgate. A bunch of accessories are also available: from hard tops to sliding platforms.

Digital cockpit instead of a Spartan office

Forget about cheap plastic from past years. Now in front of the driver stretches a dual panoramic display of 12.3 inches, combining the instrument panel and the Athena 3.0 multimedia system.

The central console has become cleaner thanks to the shift-by-wire transmission selector and electronic handbrake. The materials have also been improved: the front panel can be finished in quilted suede, and the interior lighting offers 32 color options. Of course, there are wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual-zone climate control, and plenty of USB-C ports for passengers.

Diesel, frame, and true all-wheel drive

Under the hood is a time-tested 2.2-liter turbodiesel engine delivering 225 horsepower and 441 Nm of torque. The engine is tuned to deliver maximum thrust at low revs. The transmission is six-speed, with a choice between manual or classic automatic.

The off-road arsenal here is genuine: a 4WD system, differential lock, and decent approach/departure angles (30.9° and 27.8° respectively). The ground clearance varies from 245 to 248 mm, allowing not to worry much about the surface condition under the wheels. Safety is provided by the ADAS package, including adaptive cruise control and a 3D Around View monitoring system.

The start of sales in Europe is scheduled for June 2026. The price in Italy starts at 29,746 euros excluding VAT.
