Volvo announced the integration of Google Gemini AI into its cars. Almost all brand models will receive updates starting from the 2021 model year.
It concerns cars with the Android Automotive operating system - specifically XC90, S60, V90, C40, and other current models.
Fewer commands - more normal speech
The main idea of Gemini is to eliminate rigidly set voice commands. Now the driver will be able to speak with the car more naturally. For example, the system should understand a complex request like: send a message to a specific person, translate it into another language, and explain the context.
Volvo wants to turn the voice assistant from an "executor of individual commands" into something closer to a digital interlocutor.
AI will help with routes
Gemini is also deeply integrated with Google Maps. Instead of simply entering addresses, the driver will be able to refine the route in a dialogue format - for example, search for rest stops or cafes along the way, specifying ratings, parking availability, or other details.
The car becomes even more "Google-like"
Volvo states that the main goal is to reduce interactions with the touchscreen display and allow the driver to be less distracted from the road. But there is another side to the coin. To fully function, Gemini requires a Google account and a stable internet connection.
Updates will be available for older Volvos too
Unlike some competitors, Volvo does not limit the new feature to only new models. Gemini will be available through an OTA update on already sold cars. This applies to most models starting from 2021. However, the availability of features will depend on the market, subscription, and specific car configuration.
