Five years ago, General Motors sold Opel and Vauxhall to the PSA Peugeot Citroen group, which later became the Stellantis alliance. Since then, the only GM products officially sold in Europe have been the Cadillac XT4 and Chevrolet Corvette, albeit in very small numbers in a few countries.
However, it seems that the leadership of GM has not abandoned the idea to gain a foothold in Europe. By information Automotive News, American concern is considering launching European pickup/SUV sales GMC Hummer EV and crossover Cadillac Lyriq. Both models are electric vehicles that have been growing in sales in recent years, but there may be several problems with the implementation of the plan.
First of all, these are the dimensions of the GMC Hummer. The length of a pickup truck is 5.5 m, and an SUV is 5.0 m. If this is quite normal for American roads and parking lots, then it will not be easy to drive such giants on the narrow streets of old European cities.
In addition, the electric Hummer weighs at least 4.1 tons, that is, according to EU law, it will be classified not as a passenger car, but as a commercial vehicle. Therefore, the owner will need to have the rights of the appropriate category.
Finally, there are no representative offices of the GMC brand in Europe, which means it will be necessary to build dealer networks from scratch.
Cadillac Lyriq has more potential for success in Europe. At least in Germany and Switzerland there are several dealers of the brand, the crossover weighs only 2.5 tons and at a price (in the US the price is from 62 thousand dollars) can compete with the BMW iX3 and Audi Q4 e-tron.
