The Volvo Group, Daimler Truck and Traton Group have completed the latest phase of a charging infrastructure joint venture in Europe.

The joint venture (JV) between Volvo, Daimler and Traton plans to install and operate at least 1,700 high-performance green energy charging points on and near highways and logistics centers across Europe. The parties commit to invest a total of 500 million euros, which is expected to be the largest investment in charging infrastructure in the European heavy-duty vehicle industry to date.

The name of the joint venture has not yet been announced. However, it is known that it will be a separate legal entity headquartered in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The company will be led by Anja van Niersen, former CEO of charging infrastructure provider Allegro.

Martin Lundstedt, President and CEO of Volvo Group, said that long-range electric trucks and buses cannot become popular without the right infrastructure. Therefore, the launch of a European-scale joint venture is an important milestone and accelerator on the path to carbon-neutral transport in Europe until 2050.

More details, including brand name disclosure, will be revealed before the end of 2022.
