BMW Blog insiders claim that BMW has abandoned the development of the next-generation X4 in favor of an all-electric iX4.

The reason for the cancellation was that the predicted volume for a gasoline-powered X4 was insufficient to justify a profitable return on investment, BMW Blog reports.

Initially, the G46 X4 was supposed to follow in the footsteps of the new X3: one model on an updated CLAR flexible architecture and another electric one on the Neue Klasse. However, it appears that only the NA7 iX4 will see daylight. The X4 all-electric crossover is expected to debut in 2026 at the new Debrecen plant in Hungary.

The iX4 will be available with Gen6 batteries, which will provide benefits on all fronts, including a +30 percent increase in range and +30 percent charging speed while lowering manufacturing costs by -50%. In comparison to prismatic cells presently in use, the cylindrical cells will reduce CO2 emissions generated during the manufacturing process by 60%.

There are no further details on the BMW iX4's design. However, if the manufacturing timetable indicates a 2026 release, we may see the first iX4 prototypes by 2024.

The second-generation X4 was revealed in February 2018 as the successor to the F26 X4. It shares its CLAR-platform, engines, and basic styling elements with the third-generation BMW X3.
