After overtaking South Korea for the first time, China is now the third-largest source of cars in Australia, behind Japan and Thailand. The rapid rise of Chinese-made cars has been driven by the sales of MG (owned by SAIC Motor), Great Wall Motors-Haval, and LDV.

In September 2022, new-car sales data show that cars produced in China ranked third behind Japan and Thailand, and ahead of South Korea, Germany, and the United States.

After ranking sixth in 2020 and eighth in 2019, China moved up to fourth place as the biggest source of new motor vehicles for Australia in 2021.

So far this year, MG has sold 33,800 new motor vehicles in Australia (up 17.3 percent), and is now in seventh place for the year-to-date sales race.

Great Wall Motors Haval has reported 16,371 new motor vehicles as sold over the same period (up 24 per cent).

LDV, a brand known for their pick-ups and vans, had 11,469 new vehicle deliveries by September 2022. This is 5.2% higher than the prior year's sales during the same period.

It is also worth keeping in mind that since March 2022, Chinese-made Tesla's have been shipped to Australia. In addition, Polestar electric cars are also imported from China.
