The production of the BMW iX1 has already commenced at its Regensburg Plant in Germany, marking various milestones for the automaker. The iX1's high-voltage battery is also being produced on site.

The BMW iX1 is the brand's first all-wheel-drive electric vehicle available for purchase in the compact segment. It has been on sale since October 2022 in Europe.

The start of production for the BMW iX1 at the Regensburg Plant means that all drive technologies for BMW are now able to be produced on a single line due to the plant's flexible production process. This change also allows all of BMW's German plants to produce electric vehicles, as announced two years ago. This shift moves internal combustion engine production to UK and Austria.

Apart from the production announcement, BMW has also set its next EV milestone. According to Milan Nedeljković, a member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Production, at least one third Bimmers that come out off its Bavarian plants will be electric by 2024.

The company's digital production process, called the BMW iFactory, is another point of pride. In addition to producing digitally-mapped and therefore more efficient future plant structures and production facilities, the factory also uses artificial intelligence in its manufacturing processes. The plant's paint shop is only one example: AI scans paint surfaces for flaws before finishing with a fully-automated program.
