In 2007, Richard Hammond bought a 44-year-old Opel Kadett A for £1,200 for the Botswana Special episode of Top Gear. It took him two years to ship the car to the UK after filming had wrapped up, due to some issues with the paperwork. Now Hammond's own workshop, "The Smallest Cog," has completed the restoration process.
The 1967 Kadett A is a two-door sedan powered by a four-cylinder 1.0-liter engine with 40 horsepower. It was the first generation of its kind, and all power is sent to the rear wheels.
After being painted the wrong color, Oliver now looks like it did in the show. It rides on steel wheels as it used to back when it was manufactured over 50 years ago. Even though some of exterior trim pieces are missing and its not a full-on restoration, Richard Hammond is still playing with the idea of turning into a vintage rally car.
