BMW Spain has delivered 169 vehicles to the Madrid Municipal Police, 1/3 of which are plug-in hybrids and 100% electric. The rest are micro-hybrids with a 48 V battery.

The authorities will take delivery of BMW i3, BMW 225xe Active Tourer, BMW 220i Active Tourer, BMW 530i, and BMW X5 xDrive30d models as part of the deal with the German car manufacturer.

Different types of BMW's will be used by the police in different areas for different purposes. For example, 100% electric cars will patrol Madrid Central, which is a low-emission zone. The X5 units will have specific functions, like having accessories such as snow shovels, winches, traction belts and hooks. These new vehicles will drive through the streets to ensure public safety within the framework of the agreement, which will last for 5 years.

All of those cars have special protection to ensure the safety of municipal police officers in certain situations.

A handful of these cars were handed over to the Madrid Municipal Police during a ceremony with Madrid mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida, BMW Group Spain and Portugal executive chairman Manuel Terroba, and the general director of the Municipal Police, Pablo Enrique Rodríguez Pérez.+
