Google plans to merge the departments who work on its Maps product and Waze, a mapping service Google acquired in 2013. The move comes as the company is feeling pressure to save money by reducing costs and bringing together separate operations.

Waze's team of 500 employees will fall under Google's Geo organization, which oversees Maps, Earth and Street View, starting Friday. Neha Parikh, Waze's current CEO, will leave her role, reports The Wall Street Journal.

Google stated to the journalists that it plans to keep Waze as a standalone service. For those who are unaware, Waze is known for its use of crowd-sourcing en route information, such as locations of speed cameras, cop cars and roadkill.

Google reassured its employees that no layoffs will result from the recent restructuring of its mapping services. The goal of this change is to increase efficiency by reducing overlap in mapmaking.
