The MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV boasts an electric driving range of 85 km, more than enough for daily commutes, and also has the capability to use a generator for longer trips. The rotary engine, a 8C rotary engine, was chosen for its ability to produce the necessary output with a small power unit. The rotary engine works in tandem with a high-output motor and a 17.8 kWh lithium-ion battery, paired with a 50-litre gas tank, creating a unique series plug-in hybrid system with a competitive driving range of more than 600 kilometers (373 miles).
The 830-cc gasoline engine with direct injection has a high compression ratio of 11.9:1. It develops 75 horsepower (55 kilowatts) at 4,700 rpm and 116 Newton-meters (86 pound-feet) of torque at 4,000 rpm but it doesn't actually drive the wheels. Much like in the Nissan Qashqai e-Power, the wheels are powered exclusively by an electric motor, in this case producing 167 hp (125 kW) and 260 Nm (191 lb-ft) of torque.
The MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV also offers features such as compatibility with both 2- or 3-phase AC charging and fast DC charging, 1,500 W power supply functionality, and three drive modes to suit different driving situations: Normal, EV, and Charge. Additionally, with a powerful 125 kW electric motor, it even provides slightly better driving performance than the MX-30 BEV.
The MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV needs 9.1 seconds to perform the 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) sprint and is electronically capped at 140 km/h (87 mph). Despite its weight of 1,703 kg, this small crossover still boasts impressive fuel efficiency, consuming just 1 liter per 100 kilometers in the combined WLTP cycle and emitting only 21 g/km of CO2.
Here's a visualization of how Mazda's MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV works:
The Mazda MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV will be sold in five trim levels in select European markets, but not in the US, where only the EV is available for the 2023 model year. In Germany, the plug-in hybrid's starting price is identical with the MX-30 EV's at €35,990 ($39,050). Customers can place orders from February 1, 2023.
The model unveiled at the Brussels Motor Show is the Edition R, a special edition model that will be available at €45,040 when the MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV goes on sale. The Edition R design features a Maroon Rouge Metallic finish, an exclusive exterior color for the accent around the sides of the roof, reminiscent of the roof color of the first passenger vehicle, the Mazda R360 Coupe. The rest of the body and the interior are finished in black and Edition R also includes unique design elements such as a rotor-shaped emblem sewn into the floor mats and embossed on the seat headrests.
