Volkswagen's ID. Buzz has been a hit with buyers, but the company's coolest version of the electric campervan, the ID. California, is yet to be seen. The ID. California was announced by VW's supervisory board last year and is expected to debut after 2025. Carscoops created a rendering of the model and we have gathered all the information we could find.
The ID. California will feature the signature pop-up hydraulic roof that expands the cabin space when the vehicle is parked. This will allow passengers to stand up while using the interior amenities and accommodate an extra double bed. The roof will also feature an electric pop-up mechanism. Other features include a retractable side awning, kitchenette with a gas stove and sink, water tanks, and storage compartments. The seats will likely be able to slide, fold, and rotate, creating a living-room environment inside the van.
The interior will be carried over from the high-spec trims of the ID. Buzz, including a 10-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12-inch infotainment touchscreen. The van will also have vegan upholstery and extensive use of recycled materials, electrically-adjustable seats, and plenty of USB charging ports throughout the cabin.
The ID. California will likely be based on the long-wheelbase bodystyle variant of the ID. Buzz, which is currently under development for North America. This will allow for more interior space and the fitment of a larger 111 kWh battery pack under the floor, resulting in a longer range. In terms of power output, the current EU-spec ID. Buzz comes fitted with a rear-mounted electric motor producing 201 hp (150 kW) and 229 lb-ft (310 Nm) of torque. More powertrain options will be added to the range in the near future.
According to Volkswagen, the ID. California is expected in the second half of the decade, although a concept version of the vehicle may appear earlier. The US-spec long-wheelbase VW ID. Buzz will debut in early 2024, so an upgraded version with extra gear and California badges could be seen sooner.
