Despite production hurdles that resulted in sales disruptions, Toyota has managed to maintain its title as the world's best-selling automaker in 2022. The Japanese giant shipped 10,483,024 vehicles to customers worldwide, down just 0.1% compared to 2021. This figure includes vehicles from subsidiaries Daihatsu and Hino.

In comparison, the Volkswagen Group lagged behind with 8.3 million car sales in 2022, a 7% drop from the previous year. The German automaker was impacted by supply shortages due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine and COVID-19 lockdowns in China, one of VW's major markets.

Despite a slight dip in sales, Toyota's global production increased by 5.3% to 10,610,604 units, with the core brand producing 5.2% more vehicles, reaching 9,026,713 units. While domestic production in Japan declined by 7.7%, production outside of Japan rose 11.7% to 6,370,704 vehicles.

General Motors dethroned Toyota in the US market, selling 2,274,088 vehicles compared to Toyota Motor North America (TMNA), which delivered 2,108,458 vehicles, including those under the Lexus brand.

Toyota continues to face supply chain issues, resulting in a temporary halt at its Czech Republic factory, where the Aygo X and Yaris are manufactured, from January 31 to the end of February. The automaker is adjusting its global production plans monthly due to constraints and aims to produce 10.6 million vehicles in 2023, roughly the same as 2022.
