The news arrives on the back of a recent declaration from the company that their $265,000 halo launch model – the Lightyear 0 – would be shelved so they could focus on its mainstream successor – The Lightyear 2 – projected to be sold for $40,000. At CES we had our first glimpse of the innovative EV, but now its future is unclear after this major setback.
Lightyear's concept was revealed in 2019 and has received buy-ins from Koenigsegg Motors and even Dutch government investors. It promises to revolutionize the EV segment with its combination of plug-in battery, efficient aero and solar panels allowing it to travel up to 500 miles (WLPT measurement) based on a charge. Production of it was intended for 2025.
