The S-Class S 580e 4Matic PHEV is powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged engine and a permanently excited synchronous electric motor. The engine generates 367 horsepower (274 kilowatts), while the electric motor adds a further 148 hp (110 kW) to the mix, providing a combined output of 510 hp (380 kW). The vehicle's 21.5-kilowatt-hour battery pack offers an electric range of more than 62 miles (100 kilometers) according to Europe's WLTP cycle. The vehicle's EPA range has not been released yet.
Mercedes notes that the S 580e 4Matic PHEV's electric mode provides 369 pound-feet (500 Newton-meters) of torque delivered instantly and restricts the top speed to 130 miles per hour (209 kilometers per hour). The vehicle's electric range on a single charge is nearly double the previous model. Also, the new smarter system does not significantly affect the luggage compartment.
The S 580e 4Matic PHEV comes with a 9.6-kilowatt onboard charger for home charging. However, if you plan on using fast charging, there is an optional 60 kW DC charger, which can charge the battery from 10 to 80 percent in just 20 minutes.
Mercedes has combined the E-Active Body Control active suspension with the standard Airmatic air suspension for improved ride quality. The system also includes a safety feature that raises the body in the event of a side crash.
The first examples of the S 580e 4Matic will be delivered to US showrooms in the first half of the year. Mercedes anticipates that the S-Class S 580e 4Matic PHEV will become a significant competitor in the hybrid luxury sedan market.
