Toyota's UK Corolla Commercial is designed for carrying cargo, and the carmaker has updated the vehicle for 2023 by incorporating its latest hybrid powertrain and safety features. The automaker's 1.8-liter hybrid powertrain, which is already used in the Corolla hatch and wagon, provides 138 horsepower (102 kilowatts) and reduces the time it takes for the van to reach 62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) by an impressive 1.7 seconds, bringing it to 9.4 seconds.
Toyota has been able to reduce the weight of the powertrain while also improving its output and efficiency. The car features a new power control unit, which sits above a new transaxle, providing a compact, high-output motor-generator with new internals that reduce the motor's size. The transaxle is 15% lighter than the previous generation, and the battery has been improved, reducing its weight by 14% while increasing its power by 14%.
The new Corolla Commercial also features Toyota Safety Sense, which includes a new front camera that provides a broader field of view for the driver, and an extended front millimeter-wave radar that can detect obstacles closer to the front of the car. The car maintains its large cargo capacity, which features a rubber load space lining and a mesh bulkhead that separates the passenger compartment from the cargo space. It can carry up to 1,326 liters of cargo, which can weigh up to 425 kilograms (936 pounds), and the car can tow up to 750 kg (1,653 lbs).
Toyota will produce the Corolla Commercial at its Burnaston facility in the UK, with the 1.8-liter engine built at its Deeside plant in North Wales. The 2023 Corolla Commercial is now available for purchase at a price of £24,503 (excluding VAT), which is approximately $29,413 at current exchange rates.
The Corolla Commercial is expected to continue to offer a versatile and efficient solution for businesses requiring a reliable cargo-carrying vehicle while maintaining Toyota's reputation for safety and performance.
