While the company is preparing to launch the next-generation iDrive 9 system with the new X1, BMW is not neglecting iDrive 8 and will be updating the existing software to a newer 8.5 version until all vehicles switch to the new interface.
The main improvement with the iDrive 8.5 update is the new home screen, which features more logically arranged functions and quick access to all relevant functions of the infotainment system on a single level. The new zero-layer principle allows users to access the system's most important and frequently used features without having to enter a submenu first.
The selection of quick-access icons displayed on the home screen can be individually selected and configured, and include entertainment channels, contact lists, and vehicle settings. Along with the new home screen, iDrive 8.5 also includes a better menu structure, making it easier to navigate through other functions.
Despite the lack of significant hardware upgrades, both screens receive new graphics that are more consistent with the brand's visual identity, developed by BMW Group Design. The iDrive 8.5 update continues to use a dual-screen layout with two curved displays, one for the instrument cluster and one for the infotainment system.
BMW will gradually introduce the new operating system 8.5 to all its midsize, executive, and luxury model ranges. This system will remain based on Linux, while its successor, the iDrive 9, will move to an Android architecture. However, the two systems will have a lot in common when it comes to the basic structure and logic.
