The BMW Group and AirConsole have teamed up to host a competition to create games specifically tailored to the in-car experience. The competition will be promoted jointly by both companies at the Game Developer Conference (GDC) in San Francisco from March 20-24, 2023.

The aim of the competition is to tap into the potential of the global game developer community and pioneer the field of in-car gaming. From today until June 8th, 2023, developers are invited to submit their ideas and concepts via the official competition website. The four best game concepts will be selected as winners and will each receive €5,000 to develop a prototype. If the prototype is successful, AirConsole will fully fund the development of the game to be included on the AirConsole platform. The winners will also be invited to visit the BMW Group headquarters in Munich to see their creations in action.

Stefan Butz, Vice President BMW Group Development for Entertainment and Apps, said, "This competition is a great opportunity for game developers to work with AirConsole to create engaging gaming experiences specifically for vehicles. We want to offer our customers a first-class entertainment experience and gaming is all about joy.”

Antti Makkonen, Director of Games at AirConsole, believes that gaming in the car is happening and that game developers need to create games specifically for the car use-case, stating, "Using phones as controllers inside the car makes playing accessible and fun for everyone, especially when considering that not everybody will own a game controller, or that playing directly on the car touch screen makes your arm tire quite fast.”

BMW Group chose nDream - the company behind the AirConsole brand - as a partner to bring casual gaming into the car through the BMW Startup Garage program.

AirConsole is a cloud gaming service developed by Zurich-based startup N-Dream. In 2022 it was announced that BMW would use AirConsole for in vehicle entertainment.
