The bi-directional charging will be standard on 2024 models equipped with the 2X trim or higher, including the 3X and Edition 1 derivatives, while an accessory that allows for vehicle-to-vehicle charging will be optional. GMC also plans to offer an accessory that allows the Hummer EV to power appliances such as projectors or power tools, with up to 3 kW of power.
"You could not effectively take power from the battery in this vehicle and put it into another vehicle," said Aaron Pfau, lead development engineer for the electric Hummer. "The 19.2-kilowatt charger and Level 2 AC charger that we have on board, that is really the key change that enables this."
GMC's rival, Rivian, has also announced that its R1T and R1S models will have the feature available through a software update. Ford also has a similar system on the F-150 Lightning, with the Extended Range battery capable of powering a home for up to 10 days, and with the Home Integration System and Intelligent Backup Power functions, the electric truck will automatically provide power during a blackout.
It is expected that the system implemented in the GMC Hummer twins will be very similar to the upcoming Chevrolet Silverado EV setup. General Motors has previously stated that the forthcoming electric truck will be capable of sending energy back to the grid when demand is high, potentially allowing owners to make money by gathering electricity during off-peak times when energy rates are lower.
