The BYD Song L doesn’t have a typical SUV stance but looks more like a crossover with a coupe-style tail. The proportions and the blacked-out A-Pillars are similar to the Kia EV6, while the rear view is reminiscent of the Porsche Cayenne Coupe largely due to the shape of the full-width LED taillights.
At the front, there is an illuminated grille and LED headlights similar to the BYD Han, combined with a sculpted bumper featuring large intakes. The rear is even sportier thanks to the pronounced shoulders, the dual rear spoiler above the heavily inclined rear glass, the vertical outlets on the bumper, and the massive diffuser with a carbon-fiber finish. There is also an active rear spoiler that automatically retracts when needed, flush door handles, and mirror-replacing cameras, contributing to the vehicle’s aerodynamics.
The BYD Song L rides on the e-platform 3.0 which underpins many other EVs from the Chinese brand including the Seal. The carmaker didn’t detail the specs of the new model but the architecture is compatible with single or dual electric motor layouts, and BYD’s Blade 800V battery for a decent driving range. The model also benefits from a special technology of battery integration, and intelligent active vehicle control systems.
The new “B-Class Pure Electric SUV” as described by the automaker is part of BYD’s Dynasty series, borrowing its name from the Song Dynasty which ruled Eastern China between 960 and 1279. We expect to learn more about it as we get closer to its market launch in the last quarter of the year. Among its rivals will be the Tesla Model Y which is set to receive a number of updates in 2024.
