Toyota is upgrading its legendary Land Cruiser J70 with a new 2.8-liter, four-cylinder turbodiesel engine. The new engine will complement the existing 4.5-liter V8 turbodiesel option, offering customers improved fuel economy and lower emissions while providing the same level of performance.

The four-cylinder turbodiesel borrowed from the Toyota Hilux is expected to produce around 201-221 horsepower and 420 to 550 Nm of torque. For comparison, the 4.5-liter V8 turbodiesel produces 202 horsepower.

In addition to the four-cylinder diesel, the Land Cruiser J70 is expected to offer an automatic transmission for the first time since 1990. Other upgrades include a new infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and minor cosmetic changes to the interior.

The Land Cruiser J70, available as an SUV or a pickup truck, has been a popular vehicle around the world for almost 40 years due to its classic design and durable performance. Toyota’s recent improvements to the J70 model include a new infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, minor cosmetic changes to the interior, and an expected automatic transmission option for the first time since 1990.

Toyota has not announced any plans to offer a hybrid powertrain option for the Land Cruiser J70. However, the automaker plans to produce a mild-hybrid powertrain for the Hilux and Prado models.

As Toyota approaches the official 40th anniversary of the J70, the automaker has hinted at an upcoming “big change” for the iconic vehicle. Despite being nearly four decades old, Toyota continues to improve and update the J70, keeping its popularity intact.
